SOME KINDA BLUES:

15 YEARS IN CONCEPTION, 3 YEARS IN THE MAKING, 'SOME KINDA BLUES' WAS RECORDED IN BETWEEN  A COUPLE OTHER PROJECTS.

Some of these tunes were written years ago, (Is There Something On Your Mind, Doin' The Right Thing) and some were written recently just for this EP (Try To Breathe, Blue Swing, and January). There isn't a straight blues on the EP. I believe that Blues as a genre has become stagnant and calcified. There are 3 or 4 templates that make up 99% of Blues songs. What I'm trying to accomplish in my writing for this EP is to add to the Blues some of the aspects of songs and songwriting that I most enjoy. I dig a good chorus, I like the added movement of a bridge, I love harmony singing - and those  musical concepts don't show up very often in blues.  When you add all those elements, is it still Blues? I think so.  Some kinda blues, anyway.

There is a lot more harmonica on this EP than I usually feature on my recordings. I don't think of myself as primarily a harp player these days, but I still got some chops!  As always, Andy Reed and Michael Robertson helped birth these songs.  Andy co-produced, co-wrote,  engineered, and played guitar and bass. We recorded the songs at Reed Recording in Bay City, MI. MFR co-wrote and co-produced as well as playing a lot of electric guitar and singing harmonies. Steve McCray and Loren Kranz played drums, and Steve sings harmony on Doin' The Right Thing. Loren also played keys  (he's a multi-talented cat).  Joe Clark  played bass on a couple tracks. Joe Balbaugh played upright bass on Blue Swing. Scott VanDell added juicy electric guitar to some of the songs. Amy Petty sings harmony on January. Scott Robertson sings on Is There Something On Your Mind. I REALLY enjoy getting together with my talented friends and making this EP! Hope ya dig it.
